Job Description: 

Climate Central is looking for a skilled development and grant writer to manage all aspects of our communications to donors, with concentration in three main areas — grant and proposal writing, annual appeals and stewardship writing.

Climate Central is a non-profit organization of scientists and communicators with an entrepreneurial atmosphere whose mission is to convey the science and impacts of climate change to wide audiences. We are dedicated to delivering strong, clear, fact-based messages and scientifically founded content on climate change and energy to a broad, general audience and to decision-makers across the political spectrum. Climate Central is not an advocacy organization and does not lobby or support any specific legislation, policy or bill.

General Responsibilities:

The Senior Development and Grant Writer is a critical member of the Development Team and is responsible for writing a variety of development communication vehicles including grants, proposals, reports, fund raising and marketing correspondences, presentations and correspondence for the CEO. S/he will focus primarily on producing compelling grants and proposals for foundations and high net worth individuals and secondarily on grant and donor reports as well as collateral material, annual appeals and other donor communications. Reporting to the Vice President of Development, s/he will work closely with members of the staff to be sure that all donor communications contain the highest-quality, most accurate, most up-to-date content. S/he will also work closely with Finance to ensure that all grant proposals and reports contain timely, accurate financial information.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop strong, compelling development communications pieces designed to build, grow, and protect the Climate Central brand
  • Writes donor-centric communications to support Foundation and Individual Giving activities and goals, with a focus on grant proposals and reports but also including acknowledgement updates, newsletter/annual report articles, cultivation letters, and collateral material. Drafts donor communication for the CEO
  • Gathers content, assimilates it, and turns it into compelling narrative
  • Collaborates with Development fundraising teams and with the Programs team to collect and incorporate site and program content
  • Collaborates with the Finance team to secure accurate financial reports and grant budget information for reporting compliance and tracking
  • Collaborates with Development Team and program managers to help identify, streamline and satisfy data needs for both proposals and reports
  • Collaborates with the Communications team to share content and ensure consistency of messaging and presentation among communication streams and across Climate Central platforms
  • Collaborates with social media team to create news alert messaging designed for donors as well as solicitations
  • Utilizes fundraising software to track and report on proposal/report deadlines and requests for information from the signature programs, finance, and development teamsHelps to build a knowledge management system so that written materials and content is shared and accessible to the Development team members

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree and science education is preferred
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of related writing experience, with experience in the sciences strongly preferred
  • Experience writing successful grants, proposals and compelling reports
  • Superlative writing and editing skills and experience collaborating with program managers and designers to produce high quality promotional and informational materials
  • Ability to create and manage time-intensive writing processes and prioritize multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with many diverse teams
  • Strong computer skills, including fluency in Microsoft Office

Location: This position is located at Climate Central headquarters in Princeton, NJ with an opportunity to telecommute several days a week.
