IFAW is seeking an exceptional development professional to serve as the Director of Strategic Relationships in New York. The ideal candidate will bring an abiding interest in the substance of IFAW’s work, expertise in resource development strategy, and proven fundraising success in the New York philanthropic community. The Director will be joining IFAW at an opportune time, as IFAW will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019. 

The Director will successfully expand IFAW’s major gifts donor base and build a community of high-level support in New York, including recruiting and engaging members of IFAW Global Ambassadors. Reporting to the Director of Development, Major Gifts, the Director of Strategic Relationships NY, will be a key member of IFAW’s global team.

S/he will effectively represent the organization to constituencies and will work with the major gifts and development teams to achieve philanthropic goals and build major gift support in the tri-state area.  The Director of Strategic Relationships will have support from staff in IFAW’s Washington, DC Headquarters and Yarmouth Port, MA Operations Center.



  • Manage and expand a portfolio of approximately 150 major & principal gift supporters and prospects; develop and implement strategic moves plans to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts of $10,000 to $1,000,000+.
  • Seek meetings at the highest levels of philanthropic potential for IFAW senior leadership. Prepare senior leaders for compelling engagements with Ultra-High Net-Worth Philanthropists.
  • Support the CEO, Board Development Chair, Board members, Vice President for Global Development and senior level staff in all aspects of their engagement with IFAW’s New York donors and prospects.
  • Utilize IFAW’s 50th Anniversary to develop and deepen relationships with prospects and donors.
  • Develop a community of highly influential IFAW supporters in the region; including identifying and recruiting supporters to join IFAW’s Board and Global Ambassadors.
  • Develop enticing engagement opportunities for high level prospects in the region, including salons, VIP dinners and opportunities to meet senior IFAW field staff.
  • Work with research staff, volunteers, and others to identify major and principal gift leads
  • Represent IFAW in the New York region; developing relationships with individuals capable of furthering IFAW’s mission through philanthropy, expertise and network connections.



  • Innovative, forward-thinking and entrepreneurial spirit essential.
  • Experience in participating in and developing a strategic plan for building a major gifts program.
  • Proven networking and relationship building skills required.
  • Experience in development of sustainable fundraising strategy.
  • Minimum of seven years major gifts experience with a proven track record of success with major gift cultivation and solicitation required.
  • Some experience in planned and legacy giving.
  • Highly detail oriented and self-motivated with excellent time management and fluency with standard office software.
  • Superb written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in an environmental, conservation or animal welfare organization highly desirable. 
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel is expected
