Job Description: 

Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director of Development is responsible for the oversight and direction of effective fundraising efforts that support the mission of enCourage Kids Foundation. A new position in the organization, the Director of Development will have the opportunity to build and expand on the development function at EKF.

General Duties

Ambassador for enCourage Kids Foundation

  • Act as an enCourage Kids Foundation ambassador to donors, hospital partners, and the Child Life community
  • Craft strategies and tactics to engage new prospects in EKF’s mission
  • Attend and represent enCourage Kids Foundation at key development conferences and events
  • Proactively engage with Foundations to understand their funding priorities
  • Coordinate with Director of Programs to proactively engage in learning about research and trends impacting child life and pediatric healthcare
  • Coordinate with External Relations to proactively engage in learning about corporate opportunities to advance the brand awareness and funding base for EKF

Management and Leadership Duties

  • Provide strategic leadership and supervision for the development department (in collaboration with the CEO) to guide, prioritize, and effectively resource the department’s work
  • Foster and support a high-performing team culture. Motivate and inspire staff to work collaboratively to achieve organizational goals, by clearly communicating the organization’s vision, strategies, and priorities
  • Participate actively and constructively as an executive team member, stewarding resources effectively and role-modeling the organization’s values and commitment to advancement and mission optimization
  • Manage and coach development staff and interns
  • Serve as a leading internal and external voice in helping to shape organizational outcomes and develop short and long-term commitments to achieve those outcomes

Oversight of enCourage Kids Foundation Development Efforts

  • Actively work with the CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a new comprehensive development strategy to include major gits, individual, corporate, and foundation support
  • Forecast and manage annual development budget
  • Oversee research of funding sources and trends to help position EKF ahead of major funding changes or trends
  • Collaborate with Operations and Finance Department on the design and ongoing adaptation of Donor Database ( Salesforce) to ensure helpful reporting and metrics as well as accurate data.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Programs to develop and execute an effective communications strategy and support collateral to tell the story of EKF and its impact including web, social media, newsletters, and donor communications.

Individual and Major Gifts

  • Develop and launch a comprehensive individual and major donor strategy of EKF
  • Lead efforts, with CEO to move historic event-based donors to direct major donors
  • Maximize the CEO’s efforts with major donors
  • Ensure the database is developed to effectively build and track relationships with individual and major donors

Foundation

  • Ensure effective functioning of all aspects of the Grant submissions including prospecting, qualifying, application, receipt, and impact reporting
  • Build relationships with grant officers and principals of foundations and family foundations

Corporate

  • Collaborate with External Relations team to cultivate and steward corporate philanthropic opportunities

Special Events

  • Oversee and coordinate with special events team to ensure effective special events designed to increase brand awareness, donor relations, and revenue

Experience and Qualifications

In addition to demonstrating a deep commitment to the Foundation’s mission, the successful candidate will have a minimum of 15 years of experience in development and fundraising (with 5 years as the director or top staff person in the department) with management responsibility for developing and designing high-quality, high-impact, health programs. The candidate must be a substantive, strategic, and intuitive thought leader who is able to translate the Foundation’s mission into an effective plan of action. Moreover, the Director of Development must be a builder, collaborator, influencer, and highly effective communicator who plays a critical role in engaging key stakeholders to support the mission of the foundation.

  • Minimum of 15 years working in a development related role
  • 5 years as a senior officer in the department
  • Responsibility for raising $4MM+ annually
  • High Achiever: sets goals and works continually to meet and exceed them
  • Proven track record of developing significant individual, foundation, and corporate giving
  • Self-motivated: Can independently develop and execute work plans
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with individuals and teams internally and externally, including those over whom the candidate will not have direct authority
  • Implementation of measurement systems to gauge progress and success
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; an effective listener and speaker who can make persuasive recommendations and impactful and inspiring presentations to small and large groups
  • Intellectual curiosity; an ability to imagine innovative solutions and drive/generate new thinking against an enterprise-wide strategy
  • A growth mindset; ability to anticipate opportunities and challenges
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Persuasive advocacy and negotiation skills and excellent judgement

COMPENSATION

  • Compensation for the Director of Development includes a generous salary, and a package of health and employee benefits including dental and vision.
