The Grant Writer will be the primary writer on the development team and will spend the majority of their time writing grant proposals, reports, and related documents. BioBus receives the majority of our funding from foundation grants ranging from $10K - $2M+, so this is a critical role within development team. The writer will primarily focus on new and renewal foundation applications and reports as well as corporate, government, and individual proposals. The writer will assist with other documents related to fundraising, including annual reports, presentations, budgets, flyers, and online communications. The writer will work closely with the Director of Development, Development Coordinator, Executive Director, and Chief Scientists.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Development, based in the BioBus administrative office in West Harlem, New York City. Compensation is anticipated to be $50-65K, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, transit, FSA, and progressive PTO, remote working, and family leave policies.

Expected Responsibilities

  • Write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals

  • Research, write, edit, and submit letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and grant reports, working with program teams and Director of Evaluation to have a strong understanding of programs and outcomes

  • Conduct grant/prospect and fundraising landscape research and analysis to inform development strategies, identify funding opportunities, select projects for applications, and prioritize opportunities

  • Analyze the interests of donors and prospects to develop compelling pitches for grants

  • Work with the BioBus team to understand programs and impact, gather stories, and collect information and photos to share with donors and prospects, and support programs primarily through writing

  • Help program teams, Executive Director, accountants, and Director of Development to prepare  grant budgets and financial reports for assigned grants, focusing on ensuring budgets and reports meet funder requirements

  • Work across the organization to ensure grant deliverables are met, both program outcomes and budgets are tracked, and all reporting requirements are met for assigned grants

  • Use Salesforce database to track grant and fundraising activities, with support from Development Coordinator

Qualifications (required)

  • B.A./B.S. required, preferably in a communications, English, writing, or a nonprofit-related or science field

  • 2+ years relevant work experience with proven success in grant writing, obtaining new and renewal grants and increasing grant awards

  • Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to tell a compelling story while working with tight word limits, write narratives from program outlines, and incorporate qualitative and quantitative data in a writing

  • Proficient in grant/prospect research

  • Creative, strategic and analytical thinker with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment

  • Able to take initiative, learn, grow, and improve from past experiences

  • Ability to work with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams; collaborative

  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills; efficient

  • Thorough; proven attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills

  • Strong and polished interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • Willing, interested in, and able to participate in occasional early morning, evening or weekend events that support BioBus programming and fundraising efforts


  • Science, education, and/or social justice background or interest

  • Familiarity with budgeting and financial reporting, particularly for grants

  • Project management skills and experience

  • Experience with Salesforce or similar fundraising database

  • Proficient in G-Suite/Google Apps

  • Communications experience, such as writing for press releases, social media, and print media
