DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

 

PNP Staffing Group has been retained by Cool Culture in their search for a Director of Development.

Founded in 1999, Cool Culture is a Brooklyn based nonprofit that harnesses the arts and culture,social justice principles, and partnerships with community stakeholders - families, community- based organizations and schools, as well as cultural institutions - to improve outcomes for marginalized children and families. Cool Culture’s interdisciplinary work is informed by cultural organizing, family engagement and arts education all geared to strengthening communities.

Cool Culture seeks a Director of Development to work in partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and the Cool Culture team to create and implement a fundraising plan to support organizational growth. She/he will be responsible for growing Cool Culture’s individual donor base through a combination of grassroots fundraising and major donors, expand corporate partnerships; and will work with the team to create opportunities to grow earned income. The Director of Development will also manage foundation and government partnerships, including oversight of the grants process. The position reports to the Executive Director, and is currently supported by three team members, an Institutional Giving Manager, Individual Giving Manager, and Development Assistant. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Lead assessment of agency assets, identify fundraising needs, and develop strategies to support long-term growth, as outlined in the strategic plan, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Director of Programs and Board of Directors to raise $2M budget.
  • Advise Executive Director and Board to substantially grow corporate support and individual funding base via customized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors and by demonstrating return on investment to corporate partners.
  • Lead the design and execution of new development initiatives in major gifts and sponsorships to broaden and deepen the organizations funding.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to engage Cool Culture’s high energy team to strengthen the organization’s fundraising infrastructure – sharing development best practices and creating opportunities for donors to observe and engage in Cool Culture’s work with families, community-schools, and museums.
  • Work in collaboration with the communicationsand program team to raise general awareness of the organization among prospective donors, government officials and the general public. 
  • Integrate development, communication and program strategies to capitalize on cross-functional objectives including special event visibility, donor solicitation, and collateral design.
  • Generate regular progress reports for the Executive Director and oversee the management of all development administrative tools including donor database and fundraising budgets.
  • Join the team in amassing shared knowledge of racial equity, social change, civic engagement, early childhood education, family support/engagement, culturally responsive practice and arts and cultural fields

Grassroots Fundraising

  • Develop and evaluate an annual grassroots fundraising plans with an emphasis on diversifying sources of income including membership models, house party support, small donation appeals to partners and former constituents.
  • Coordinate the Board, Associate Board and staff, in the planning and execution of donor campaigns and annual fundraising events.
  • Develop and evaluate a strategy to engage Board, Associate Board, staff, volunteers and partners to connect with prospective donors at programmatic events.
  • Envision and pursue other potential revenue streams and programs to diversify and grow Cool Culture’s revenue base.
  • Cultivate staff and key stakeholders as Cool Culture brand ambassadors.
  • Develop, manage and evaluate sustained and online giving opportunities. Maintain and update content of fundraising elements of website, and increase the visibility of online giving opportunities.

Individual Giving and Major Gifts

  • Oversee individual donor cultivation by including developing relationships with new and potential donors. Coordinate Executive Director in managing donor relationships. Work with Board, Associate-Board and staff, to identify major donors through diverse networks and methods. (ie. Major donors and Sustainers)
  • Administer special events aligned with Cool Culture’s emerging brand to build visibility via the organization’s social media, PR/marketing campaigns and programmatic eventsand artists’ partnerships.
  • Oversee proper tracking and relationship management of individual donors through use and upkeep of donor database.

Institutional Giving

  • Manage outreach and cultivation of City and State Legislators to establish and maintain relationships with key agency officials in collaboration with development team, and join the Executive Director and Director of Programs in representing the organization at meetings and delivering testimony to advance goals.
  • Overseecorporate, foundation and government grants process,supporting the Institutional Giving Manager and program team to develop proposals and write grant reports.
  • Identify and develop foundation and corporate prospects to support the organization’s fundraising priorities
  • Develop a plan to strengthen relationships with existing donors, cultivate relationships with new donors, and maintain productive personal contact with current and potential major donors and partners

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional philanthropic experience in nonprofit resource development, including foundation, corporate support, individual fundraising; the use of communications and marketing strategies to strengthen visibility, and demonstrated experience increasing revenue streams. Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 4 years of experience in a management leadership capacity required; as well as experience working with a growing board of directors
  • Highly self-motivated, with an interest in organizational capacity building, developing partnerships and creative use of fundraising, communications and marketing strategies to grow small, dynamic organization
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced environment managing multiple demands and priorities
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills required; excellent organizational ability, attention to detail and accuracy a must
  • Flexibility and initiative to work both independently and as part of a team, sense of humor required
  • Commitment to social justice and to Cool Culture’s mission of making cultural institutions accessible and available to all New York families, regardless of income level; and a desire to learn about early education, arts and culture.
  • Knowledge about the history of art as a vehicle for social change and racial equity work a plus.
  • Excellent computer skills (knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and database skills required)
