News from the President 5.12.17

I was recently in San Francisco where I attended the AFP International Fundraising Conference held at Moscone West.  It began with two days of pre-conference workshops, followed by the official opening on April 30th continuing through May 2nd.

A series of special evening events were offered each night but the sessions were the main attraction. Held each day, all day on all three floors of Moscone West there were over one hundred plus sessions in all.  Every aspect of fundraising, fundraising leadership and management, trends and innovation were covered, including international fundraising and global fundraising partnerships.

Lunch in the Marketplace Showcase was also included for attendees.  I enjoyed connecting with colleagues and meeting new people during the lunches and in the sessions I attended.  At one lunch, I met a young woman named Wei, a fundraiser from China who told me that fundraising was introduced in China several years ago, is accepted by the government and is taking hold. We exchanged cards and I look forward to hearing from her. With over 3,800 people in attendance, it was almost a surprise when I ran into someone I knew at a session or in the hall.

These conferences also include workshops with AFP Chapters leaders and board members to discuss and share goals, challenges and solutions.

Along with meeting interesting people, meeting with other AFP Chapter leaders and attending great sessions, a highlight for me was dinner with AFP NYC Chapter members and AFP DC Chapter members.  A very special highlight was Cleve Jones, the Closing General Session speaker.  The Human Rights and AIDS Activist, protégé of Harvey Milk and creator of The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, Cleve Jones’ words and authenticity resonated throughout the hall and brought down the house in the best possible way.
