I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver
AFP NYC's signature fall event will kick-off our industry’s year-end season of giving with a grand luncheon celebration of the diversity and generosity of ordinary New Yorkers doing extraordinary work to make our city more beautiful, compassionate, and humane.
The 16th annual luncheon will honor Jane O'Connell, President of the Altman Foundation. During the Foundation’s centennial, Jane will be honored with the 2013 Ralph E. Chamberlain Award for her leadership in the philanthropic sector and her commitment to AFP. Join us as we recognize our esteemed colleague and pay tribute to the many ways in which Jane’s knowledge, mentorship, and generous spirit help shape philanthropy and fundraising in our city.
The event will be hosted by NY1’s Budd Mishkin, host and reporter of the network’s weekly profile series, "One On 1 with Budd Mishkin," which profiles influential New Yorkers who have significant personal and professional ties to the city. Among those profiled since the series started in 2003 are musicians Wynton Marsalis, Wyclef Jean and Judy Collins; writers Robert Caro, Gay Talese and Pete Hamill; TV chefs Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay and Anthony Bourdain; broadcaster Mike Wallace; educator Geoffrey Canada; environmental activist Majora Carter; and Donald Trump, Ed Koch, Mario Cuomo. Budd will interview a panel of Featured Philanthropists live during National Philanthropy Day program.
Our Featured Entrepreneur, Guy Livingstone, co-founded Tough Mudder, along with Will Dean. Tough Mudder is a hardcore, 10+ mile obstacle course series with more than 50 events on three continents. Headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, the company has reached more than one million participants since its launch in 2010, making it one of the fastest growing companies in the country. In the US, Tough Mudder partners with the Wounded Warrior Project to raise funds and awareness for injured servicemen and women. To date, Tough Mudder participants have raised more than $6.5 million for the cause. And nearly 25% of all participants use the event to raise money for non-profits.
Featured Philanthropist, Daniel Rose, is Chairman of Rose Associates, Inc., a New York-based 85-year old real estate organization, and has pursued a career involving a broad range of professional, civic and non-profit activities. Professionally, he has developed such properties as the award-winning Pentagon City complex in Arlington, VA and the One Financial Center office tower in Boston, MA. As an institutional consultant, his credits include the creation and implementation of the "housing for the performing arts" concept for New York's Manhattan Plaza. “We must learn from each other how best to respond to our common problems” are inspiring words from Mr. Rose, during a speech given in Italy at the Fondazione Cariplo Forum on Philanthropy. By all accounts Mr. Rose is a convener, a problem-solver, an innovator, an advocate, a creator of opportunities, a visionary and a dreamer who is constantly looking for the next opportunity to address a compelling societal issue in ways that can lift up people and communities.
Richard Brown is the Vice President of Philanthropy at American Express where he oversees the company’s global giving programs under the Historic Preservation and Leadership giving themes, which includes the Partners in Preservation program with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monument Fund’s Watch List, as well as the American Express Leadership Academy. Additionally, Mr. Brown was a key presenter of the first-ever White House Forum on Nonprofit Leadership and plays a lead role in the development of an on-line leadership development portal for nonprofit leaders.
Michael Rodgers, VP of Development and Philanthropy, will represent NYRR on our Philanthropic Champions panel. Rodgers joined NYRR in April 2013 after working as VP of Development for Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) where he reinvigorated the organization’s development efforts by combining his fundraising experience with his passion for sports. Prior to joining WSF, Rodgers served as a Regional Vice President with top tier consulting firm, CCS Fundraising, where he worked with more than 60 nonprofit organizations to improve their strategic planning, fundraising and methods for developing campaign leadership.
